Unwanted Facial Hair

One life long lament of the ladies is that of visible facial hair and the ladies are forever concerned with the best way to get this unwanted and unseemly hirsute endowment out of the way.

Bleach: This is perhaps the simplest method to deal with facial hair. Here facial hair is lighted to a color that is the same as or similar to the skin tone, thereby making it almost invisible. This is painless however it may not be suitable for all skin types and colors and if facial hair is thick or coarse it may give an unattractive appearance.

Using a Hair Remover This method certainly gets rid of the hair, but only from the surface, and so the hair regrows fairly quickly. Add to that the fact that hair remover creams tend to smell a bit and that they could be a problem for people with sensitive skin.

Tweezing or Threading : It goes without saying that these are the painful options and may best be performed by trained professionals (unless it is only a few stray stands that you may want to get rid of by yourself). If not done properly, it can not only be painful but also cause boils and cause ingrown hair and scarring. The benefit with threading and tweezing is of course that it gets rid of the hair from the root and so the hair takes a while to reappear.

Hair Accessories

We thought it was time for another fun post today, let’s talk about hair accessories. Summer is a great time to indulge in some cool and quirky accessories for your hair, read on to see how:

A Hat : Not only does a hat add some smart sophistication to an outfit, it also protects your skin and hair from the wind and sun. Secret tip: A hat is a great way to tide over a bad hair day!

Head scarf : This one does not necessarily have to make you look like a bag lady, a bright head scarf tied like a hair band, makes a funky, retro statement.

Pins or Berets : dressing for a formal occasion usually means a more elaborate or formal ‘up’ do. Add a decorative hair pin or jeweled beret and you can transform your tresses!

Flowers : you don’t have to wait till you visit Hawaii for this one; one well chosen bloom tucked into the hair is a fragrant and beautiful addition to your hair.

Headbands : No, these need not be just for kids or hippies. A correctly chosen and coordinated headband, can very well enhance your outfit.

So go ahead and be a bit adventurous with your hair!

The Microdot Process

Losing hair? Don’t lose sleep about it. The microdot process is one way to restore that which nature seems determined to take from you. This is non surgical replacement for thinning hair which blends with your natural hair in terms of color and texture. This procedure mixes actual human hair with your own in a manner that permits you to wash, curl, blow dry and put up your hair in a pony tail as well.

Actual human hair is sourced and imported from around the globe giving you the option of normal looking hair, with length as well as fullness. This process uses a simulation of a micro fine matrix combined with high quality hair that is applied to the strategically placed ‘Microdots’ in the areas where your hair may be appearing in a bald patch or even just beginning to thin out. This method of hair attachment lets your real hair breathe and grow at the same time. This youtube video gives you an idea about this process, which can help you decide whether this is the treatment for you.

Healthy Food for Healthy Hair

We have talked about hair vitamins before, and this is a variation of the same theme: what to eat for healthy hair.

Very often our hair is a reflection on our eating habits. While glossy, lovely hair is a sign of a healthy well-nourished body, dry, dull, lifeless hair could be because of poor nutrition and poor overall health. Poor nutrition could lead to fading and drying of hair and even premature graying.

You diet should be wholesome and nutritious including good quality protein balanced with minerals, iron, calcium, selenium and vitamins. Dairy products, meat, fish, bone soups, nuts, pulses and cereals, green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits provide general nutrition to the hair. Iron is necessary for hair too, so eat peanuts, green leafy vegetables, dates etc.

Tea, coffee and alcohol can act as diuretics, hastening and increasing loss of water from the body, so limit your intake of these items. Unless a person is considered obese and/or has been diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance, food containing Linoleic acid such as fish, meat, milk and vegetable oils can be added to food. Also food such as carrot, beets, radish, curry leaves and leafy greens has been shown to prevent premature graying.

How to Wash Hair

We hear you say, “Why do I need to learn that? I’ve been doing it for years!” Well but it is possible that you have not been doing it right.

One of the reasons for unnecessary hair breakage is an incorrect washing technique. Shampoo commercials invariably show us ladies shampooing their hair with their tresses all glamorously piled up on their head. Actually that is not the way that hair should be washed, because when you pile it up like that on top, you are tangling up your hair in a manner that will lead to breakage when you are combing out your wet hair.

So follow these steps next time you shampoo:

1. Comb your hair well before you wet it make sure the snarls are out.

2. Then wet it well, saturate it.

3. Take the shampoo and massage it into your scalp. You don’t need to concentrate so much on the ends of the hair or you will dry them out.

4. Now rinse thoroughly, not being thorough enough leads to product build up.

5. When you apply conditioner, concentrate on the ends of the hair and keep the conditioner away from the scalp as far as possible. Now rinse it out or don’t as per the kind of conditioner you use.

6. Now don’t wring out your hair, instead wrap it in a towel to blot excess moisture and then comb it out.

Is your hair squeaky clean yet?

Sun Protection for Hair

Most of us know that protecting the skin from the damage that the sun’s ultra violet rays can cause is crucial, not only for cosmetic reasons and to prevent sun burn but also to prevent problems such as skin cancer etc. But not as many of us know that the hair can also get ‘sun burned’.

The sun can dry and fade your hair, and even cause split ends and you should take special care of your hair when you are about to expose it to extended periods of sunlight. This is true for your next beach holiday and also your next skiing holiday, because even when the sun does not feel that hot, the UV rays are still causing damage to your tresses.

So how do you protect your hair from sun damage? The best option is a hat that covers all of your hair. This is however not always possible the next best option is sunscreen for the hair. Many hair products such as gel, mousse, spray etc have UV protection built into them which are also a convenient option. So next time you want to enjoy the sun, be smart about your hair.

Hair Color Basics

A lot of us color our hair and many of us do it at home without the aid of salons. While a salon may be able to advise you about the sort of hair color that would be suitable for your coloring and quality of hair, at home you have to make your own judgment. When you do your own hair coloring, keep the following in mind:

Don’t go by the color on the box : Remember you don’t know the original color of that model’s hair, her hair texture or how her color treatment was done.

Don’t make it too light : If the hair color is too close to the tone of your skin, it will make you look washed out.

Don’t make it too dark : Now this one presents an even bigger problem because while you can color your hair to make it a lighter color, the reverse is very difficult to do and you may then have to consult a professional.

It is therefore best to do a preview test before coloring and then make up your mind.

Manage Curly Hair

People with curly hair have one perpetual problem. Every morning the hardest thing they have to do is get the curly hair in place. Here are some ways to manage curly and/or frizzy hair more effectively in less time:

1. Always massage your hair with olive oil before washing them. This will help in keeping the dryness in control. If possible, keep the oil in your hair overnight to allow it to seep into and nourish the scalp.

2. After shampooing, use a dash of conditioner.

3. Never use a dryer; instead tie a loose ribbon to your hair and let it dry naturally. This will help in keeping the volume of your hair under control.

Go ahead and enjoy all the attention your curls bring you when you step on to the street!

Itchy Scalp: What causes it?

Statistics tell us that one in five Americans suffer from an itchy scalp condition, which can be mildly to incredibly annoying and may be caused by any of several reasons.

When you say itchy scalp, most people assume that this is caused by dandruff (white flaking and dryness), which is true in a lot of cases but this is only one of the reasons. It can also be caused by psoriasis (a chronic scaling and inflammation of the skin) or by seborrheic dermatitis (sensitivity to the presence of excessive skin yeasts), head lice or even sunburn.

Sometimes an itchy scalp may be caused by something as simple as poor hair hygiene or a reaction to a hair product such as a colorant or a procedure performed on the hair such as a perm etc.

So before buying an over the counter medication or hair product for dandruff, consider what exactly your symptoms are and seek a specific remedy for your condition.
