Healthy Food for Healthy Hair

We have talked about hair vitamins before, and this is a variation of the same theme: what to eat for healthy hair.

Very often our hair is a reflection on our eating habits. While glossy, lovely hair is a sign of a healthy well-nourished body, dry, dull, lifeless hair could be because of poor nutrition and poor overall health. Poor nutrition could lead to fading and drying of hair and even premature graying.

You diet should be wholesome and nutritious including good quality protein balanced with minerals, iron, calcium, selenium and vitamins. Dairy products, meat, fish, bone soups, nuts, pulses and cereals, green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits provide general nutrition to the hair. Iron is necessary for hair too, so eat peanuts, green leafy vegetables, dates etc.

Tea, coffee and alcohol can act as diuretics, hastening and increasing loss of water from the body, so limit your intake of these items. Unless a person is considered obese and/or has been diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance, food containing Linoleic acid such as fish, meat, milk and vegetable oils can be added to food. Also food such as carrot, beets, radish, curry leaves and leafy greens has been shown to prevent premature graying.
