A Little Shampoo Know-how

How many times have you seen the instructions on the back of a pack of shampoo “Lather, rinse, repeat”. Do you really need to? Repeat we mean? Well the answer is ‘No’ most of the time. You don’t need to shampoo twice in the routine course. If however, for some reason your hair in unusually dirty or unusually thick you may need to shampoo twice.

Also what about all those 2 in 1 shampoos? Any good? Well if you have oily hair, you don’t need the added conditioning and if you have dry hair, the moisturizing agents in these 2-in-1 products are not enough and in which case you need a separate conditioner so these 2 in 1 products are not much good.

As for the kind of shampoo to use, it is always a good idea to use mild shampoo that is free from additives and coloring. If you can sacrifice fragrance, go in for a fragrance free shampoo. In fact it makes a lot of sense to use baby shampoo, this works for a lot of people.

New Studies to Banish Bad Hair Days

New studies that explored the working of hair with an atomic – force microscope are finding out why hair feels smooth or rough to the touch; why we have days when our hair is frizzy and unmanageable and other days when it is perfectly well behaved. By concentrating on finding out how hair fibers interact, the studies are trying to pin point why and when hair feels good and why and when it doesn’t.

According to the team conducting the studies, damage to hair causes scaly projections to protrude from hair fibers. These projections create friction with other fibers and make hair feel rough to the touch and hard to comb. It has also been found that electrical charges build up on hair, causing friction.

So once it is understood what makes hair behave the way it does, special formulations can be developed for personalizing solutions for those bad hair days, figuring out what happens to the hair when it’s exposed to hair-care products such as shampoo and conditioner.

It is thought that these studies will greatly help in optimizing hair care products developed in the future.

Split Ends: The Facts

Fact 1 : Split Ends cannot be repaired. No matter what a lot of products proclaim to be able to do, once your hair shaft is split at the end, there is no reversing of this process. The only option is to cut off the split end. You cannot ‘mend’ a split end; products that promise that will only temporarily glue split ends together. And this can be cause for more damage later. Instead trim hair regularly and between trims you can trim split ends yourself.

Fact 2 : Only prevention is possible, not cure. Minimize the number of chemicals you put in your hair, use a correct washing technique, do not expose hair to too much heat (this includes direct exposure to strong sun light as well as using frequently and for too long items such as hair dryers, curling irons and flat irons). Also be kind to your hair by oiling the tips with olive oil before a shampoo.

Fact 3 : If you have spit ends now, do not despair, it is possible to get rid of them and not have them recur with a little bit for TLC for the hair!

Ceramic Flat Hair Iron : Buyer Beware

Now it is true that the classic straight haired look is something coveted by all, and this brings us to the tremendous popularity of the flat iron, particularly the ceramic flat iron which claims to heat quicker and more uniformly that the conventional metal ones. It is true that this kind of hair straightening device gives quicker results, but there is some evidence now to suggest that using it too often and on a high temperature setting can damage hair and lead to breakage of hair.

Experts have opined that these straightening implements can really take a toll on the structure of the hair and cause very noticeable problems that can be hard to repair. The excessive heat from the iron breaks and then reforms the hydrogen bonds in the inner core of the hair fiber and damage to the outer protective cuticle can result in weathering, damage and eventual hair breakage. Damage can be especially acute to color treated hair or hair that is damaged to begin with.

So keep this in mind if you are planning of buy one of these or already have and use them.

Hair Extensions: The Lowdown

Do you look at fabulous celeb hair and wonder if they borrowed some hair? We certainly do, because very often those famous tresses are enhanced by cleverly done hair extensions. Let’s look at some hair extension FAQs:

How long does it take to have them put in?

Anything between 2 (for adding volume) and 8 hours (for adding both volume and length).

How is it done?

This can be done by a variety of different ways, where hair is taken and blended into your hair by weaving in, heat fusing, gluing, clamping with metal rods or using waxes and polymers. There are also clip-on varieties.

How long does it last?

For a few months and then they have to be taken out (this can be a very tricky process and if not done properly can cause real damage) and the whole process repeated.

How much does it cost?

Anything from a couple of hundred bucks to several thousand!

Hair Types: Some Rules of Thumb

Dry Brittle Hair : Wash and condition; use extra conditioner and keep away from heat and direct sunlight. You can even use a conditioning treatment that will seal in the moisture, protect the cuticle and also add some shine, so that your hair is stronger and better hydrated.

Thin Lifeless Hair : Sometimes, this kind of hair does not respond to any of the products that offer ‘fullness’, ‘volume’ etc., so what you can do is add interest and texture to flat hair by getting a more layered hair style, and also layering the color to give an appearance of fullness.

Thick, Unmanageable Hair : The most important thing to do is to get a suitable hair style that gets rid of some of the bulk of hair to make it more manageable and so the hair looks lighter. Also pay heed to the products you use, don’t use the volumizing shampoo or conditioner, and go with the regular kind instead.

Oily Hair : Whatever the hair style chosen, oily hair needs to be washed more often than other kinds of hair; every other day, or even everyday. Use a clarifying shampoo and don’t use a conditioner unless required.

Hair Loss Molecule Identified

In a potentially far reaching and significant study, researchers at Stanford University have identified a molecule that triggers hair follicle growth in mice. So this study could in the future mean some benefit to those that suffer from hair loss.

The report, published in the Journal of Genes and Development, “focuses on a molecule called laminin-511. The molecule acts like an operator, transferring messages, or proteins, between the outer and inner layers of skin, an exchange that ultimately drives hair formation ”.

While there are products available currently that retard or slow down loss of hair, what this molecule could do is renew the actual follicles that grow hair! In that sense this appears to be a study that has broken new ground.

While obvious beneficiaries of such a treatment developing in the future could be anyone that suffers from hair loss, it could particularly benefit sufferers of alopecia and people suffering from cancer who have had to undergo chemotherapy with a result of loss of hair.

This research, however is in its very early stage and lots more is required to be done to figure out how this can be applied to humans.

Laser Hair Removal

When we talk about permanent hair removal the topic of laser hair removal invariably comes up. It sounds like a great option so that you never have to bother about hair removal ever again. However this procedure has several limitations, so take them into account if you are thinking about laser hair removal.

For one, you need several sessions of the procedure because the laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Of course all hairs are not in their growth cycle at any given time and so more sessions will be required to target the other hairs that will enter their growth cycle later, so that all of the follicles in a given area can be disabled.

Also it is important to understand that this procedure may not work for everyone, and works best on those that have the combination of pale skin and coarse dark hair.

Further this procedure is touted to be ‘permanent’; however, touch up treatments may sometimes be required 1 to 2 times a year after the initial set of treatments.

Take all this into account and ask plenty of questions if you do decide to go in for this treatment.
