Hair Color and Confidence

An interesting study, (admittedly carried out at the instance of a hair color company) has found that women who color their hair have a higher degree of self confidence which is reflected both in their interpersonal relationships as well as their professional dealings.

Confidence and mood levels appeared to be significantly enhanced and inhibitions lowered to an extent that “There was a marked improvement in the ability to express their opinions and ask for things that they may not ask for ordinarily in a work environment.” according to Dr Mark Sergent. Not only were women found to be more assertive after coloring hair, they also found that they got more attention and were more noticed by friends and family.

However hair color is not as simple a matter as it may seem and it is important to pay attention to some basics about hair color, and to remember that hair color does have at least some negative connotations for your hair and that hair does need some tender loving care after you are done coloring it.

Amino Acids in Hair Care Products

We hear a lot about amino acid based hair care products and how they are miraculously good for the hair: how shampoos, rinses, treatment agents containing certain kinds of amino acids make hair less breakable by increasing water holding capacity and how amino acids turn hair “smooth” and “moist”.

So what is the reality, do amino acid based hair care products really have such a beneficial effect on hair? Critics are skeptical of any real benefits accruing from these products; many are of the view that additions of these ingredients are mainly for marketing purposes. It has been found that though amino acid based hair care products are generally mild and not harsh; and also do a good job of cleaning and conditioning the hair, the amino acids present in the product, such as they are, do not directly affect the hair. However the fact that the product has added amino acids as opposed to more artificial and chemical products would be harsher for hair, is a positive factor. So on a balance you could say that amino acid products may not exactly be miraculously good for the hair, but equally they won’t harm your hair.

DNA Test for Hair Loss in Women

Did you know that an average person does not realize that they are losing hair until 50 percent of their hair has already fallen out? Well that is a pretty scary thought that hair loss can creep up on you like that without even realizing it. After all when you are not forewarned you cannot be forearmed!

A simple DNA test however, which is as uncomplicated as swabs on each cheek can now help women determine if they are at any real risk of substantial hair loss before the age of 40. It helps women know whether they have the genetic predisposition to hair loss; whether they are one among the 25% of women who will suffer female pattern balding. To be sure, losing hair is far more traumatic for women than it is for men.

You cannot regrow lost hair so if one is reasonably aware of what your genes have in store for you, you can take adequate precautions to arrest hair fall before it is too late.

Go Gray Gracefully

Most of the time, gray hair is caused by reasons beyond our control, heredity, environmental factors, pollution etc and sometimes due to things more within our control, such as stress, nutrition, even smoking. Gray hair does not mean the end of your youthful looks. There are ways to embrace your gray hair and look as attractive and striking as you would otherwise.

Consider stopping the use of hair color if more than half your hair is gray, this is enough to give an even and symmetrical look to your hair.

Also consider changing your hair style to one that is more suitable for the changed color of the hair. A well cut bob makes the hair appear thicker and less straggly and is also youthful. So if you are conscious of gray hair appearing too aging, then this style will take care of it.

Use gray appropriate products to lend more shine and luster to the hair so that it appears more silver then gray. If you take good care of your grays, there is no reason that you should not be able to confidently carry off your newer, more mature look!

Hair Perming Facts

While lovely lustrous curls may be really desirable, especially for those who have thin, straight, limp hair and are looking to add body to it, perming is the physical wrapping of the hair into shapes and a chemical bath that breaks and then reforms the disulfide bonds of your hair. In other words, the chemicals soften the inner structure of the hair. So when you do go for a perm, you need to remember the following:

· Some people may be allergic to the solution used for perming. If the solution is left in for too long it may be damaging for the scalp even to the extent of causing blisters. And getting frequent perms is not a good idea. Also remember not to color your hair just before getting a perm, because a perm will generally strip your hair of such additives anyway.

· Sometimes hair can perm unevenly, so make sure that the stylist applies the solution in an optimum manner for the optimum length of time as well.

· Perming chemically alters your hair, so be prepared to take very good care of it once it is permed especially since permed hair is very prone to split end. Also use a wide toothed comb to comb your hair.
