Cranial Prosthesis

A cranial prosthesis, or a hair prosthesis is often referred to as a cancer wig; it is often understood to mean a wig. There are, however several points of difference between a cranial prosthesis and an ordinary wig.

The first and immediately evident difference between the two is that a cranial prosthesis is the term used when applying for medical insurance or tax deduction status.

While wigs are most typically generically made; i.e. not for any particular person and are used for a variety of cosmetic and commercial purposes;  a cranial prosthesis is custom made and fitted especially for sufferers of different ailments ranging from cancer to male and female pattern hair loss and alopecia.

A cranial prosthesis is made by ventilating the hair (i.e. attaching the hair one by one with a special needle) using artificial or real human hair to a prosthetic hypoallergenic scalp, and custom-made to fit the shape and size of an individual’s head. They usually are made, colored and constructed by hand by making a cranial mold of the person to ensure the perfect fit.

Want Hair Extensions? Beware!

Hair extensions may be an attractive and quick way to get those long lustrous locks, but recent research indicates that hair extension procedures are not without pitfalls. A recent article in the Daily Mail reports that skin experts have warned that those opting for hair extensions develop the risk of developing permanent bald patches.

According to the article, dermatologists say the extensions, which are attached to a person’s real hair by glue, weaving or braiding, put such tension on follicles in the scalp that they can become inflamed causing hair to fall out. This is a condition known as traction alopecia. Damage that is caused to the hair follicles is permanent and irreversible, which is why bald spots that may be caused by hair extensions are permanent.

What is also a cause for concern is that damage cause by extensions may not immediately be apparent; however the damage is evident upon closer observation. Celebs such as Victoria Beckham, Kate Beckinsale, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears have also all been spotted with thinning hair after using extensions.
