Want Hair Extensions? Beware!
Hair extensions may be an attractive and quick way to get those long lustrous locks, but recent research indicates that hair extension procedures are not without pitfalls. A recent article in the Daily Mail reports that skin experts have warned that those opting for hair extensions develop the risk of developing permanent bald patches.
According to the article, dermatologists say the extensions, which are attached to a person’s real hair by glue, weaving or braiding, put such tension on follicles in the scalp that they can become inflamed causing hair to fall out. This is a condition known as traction alopecia. Damage that is caused to the hair follicles is permanent and irreversible, which is why bald spots that may be caused by hair extensions are permanent.
What is also a cause for concern is that damage cause by extensions may not immediately be apparent; however the damage is evident upon closer observation. Celebs such as Victoria Beckham, Kate Beckinsale, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears have also all been spotted with thinning hair after using extensions.
