Hair Competition
Remember the sixties and the bouffant hair style? Well the International Fantasy Hair Competition celebrated just that and a competition that attracted stylists and competitors from all over the US was held at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The proceeds went to the New Hampshire Food Bank.
The first prize went to Amaris Brown of Detroit and stylist Kevin Carter of the Detroit suburb Farmington Hills for the hair arrangement called “Proud Peacock,” a big spray of feathers with hair shaped into what looked like the bird dancing with its feathers spread out to attract his mate.
There was one style that involved a three foot cherry tree perched atop the contestant’s head to symbolize the strength and beauty of womanhood. There was also a hair suit on display as was a gigantic puffball of tufted hair clumps and chain mail.
To keep the complex dos aloft, the competitors suffered pain and also learned how to walk in a way that did not dislodge their creations off their heads.
It was a fun show which explored how very creative people can get with their tresses. An evening dedicated to hair and to hair art!
