Emotional Difficulties of Hair Loss

We know that people who suffer from hair loss would give a lot to reverse the problem not only because their vanity suffered but for other, more significant emotional issues.

The results of a recently commissioned report found that a “significant minority” of people who underwent hair loss were found to be at risk of serious psychosocial consequences, including depression, anxiety, lower self-esteem and identity change.

Hair loss is a common problem however not much is known about its consequences and effect on people. What is not fully understood is the extent to which hair loss holds a negative perception in society which is why it is now suggested that people with this problem should be given access to therapy.

Out of 1,400 people questioned, a quarter of people with hair loss felt distressed when they looked in the mirror, 33% felt self-conscious, and almost 20% said they lacked confidence in social situations. Those polled said the condition would have a “significant risk” of damaging relationships and worried their sexual attractiveness would decrease as a result of it.

So perhaps there is more to hair loss than immediately meets the eye and solutions may be even more important for us to find.
