‘Cell Stress’ Grays Hair says National Geographic

It is commonly understood that stress is a factor in turning hair gray, so that you had people who had their “hair turn grey from worry”, but now a new study has found that it is also cell stress that is a factor responsible for graying of our hair.

Our very DNA is constantly under attack from damaging agents, such as chemicals, ultraviolet light, and ionizing radiation, according to study as reported by the National Geographic. The lead author of the study has estimated that a single mammal cell can encounter up to 100,000 events a day that damage DNA and that the stem cells within hair follicles responsible for color are the most impacted by this irreparable DNA weathering.

So this is one more advancement in understanding why our hair becomes gray, including factors such as chemicals that hair comes into contact with, such as hydrogen peroxide etc.

There are, after all, ways to Go Gray Gracefully!

Patch Test for Hair Color

Even those among us who have been used to visiting the salon for hair coloring requirements, will think twice about this avoidable expenditure in these times of economic stringency. There is definitely the option of coloring hair at home and if you have not done this before, it is absolutely necessary that you do the patch test for an allergic reaction to hair color.

It isn’t just a statutory requirement; this is an important thing to do when you decide to color your hair at home. There is a specific chemical found in many hair dyes and colors, Para-phenylenediamine which can cause an allergic reaction.  It could cause an allergic reaction ranging from an itchy or red scalp to red or swollen face!

So if you do decide to use a new hair color product, remember to follow the instructions to do a patch test: a small dab behind the ear is a good idea. If there is any irritation, redness and sensitivity, don’t use the product. Remember it could be much more expensive to treat the allergic reactions that the amount you will lose through the wasted product!

Different Parts of the Body, Different Hair

Understanding the reason why body hair grows only to a certain length and no further, and the fact that the hair on the head never stops growing, also helps us understand how hair grows. The hair on a person’s forearms or legs never grows beyond a particular length, whereas, if you don’t get your head hair cut or if it does not actually fall out, there is no end to how long it can grow. Similarly a man’s facial hair will also grow and grow unless it is trimmed or shaved. This is why you have people setting world records for the longest beard or moustache or plait but none for longest arm hair or leg hair!

What controls hair length is the amount of time that the hair follicle is active. So the hair follicles on top of your head might be active growing hair (called the growth phase) for a year, then take a rest (the rest phase). When they take a rest, the hair falls out. So it is all about the ‘growth phase’ of hair which decides how long the hair grows. For people with hair difficulties, it is important to understand this ‘growth phase’ and the ‘rest phase’.
