Rogaine: How does it Work and What are the Side effects

Rogaine and Regaine are the names for the Minoxidil medication that is known to slow or stop hair loss and promote hair re-growth. It is available over the counter for treatment of androgenic alopecia, among other baldness treatments. This formulation is required to be applied directly to the hair (the medication also comes in oral form) and for maximum benefit it should be kept there for several hours.

The problem however is that measurable changes disappear within months after discontinuation of treatment. Side effects of application or oral Rogaine can include:

  • Itchy scalp
  • Dandruff
  • In some cases it may increase hair loss to begin with. In fact hair loss is the most common side effect
  • Oral dosage can cause swelling, rapid or irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, cardiac lesions, and focal necrosis of the papillary muscle and subendocardial areas of the left ventricle
  • Contact with styling products may be harmful or render the styling product ineffective.
