How Do Hair Transplants Work?

Many of us, even those who dislike the sight of the bald pate staring at us from the mirror may not be aware of what a Hair Transplant is or how a hair transplant works. Simply put, Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves moving skin containing hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to bald or balding parts (the recipient site). This is the procedure usually used for treating male pattern baldness and is sometimes also known as follicular unit micrografting.

This technique involves taking skin (most of the dermis and epidermis is taken) surrounding a hair follicle that is genetically resistant to hair fall which is usually the strip of skin from the posterior scalp in the case of male patter balding since this is the area of hair growth that is resistant to male pattern balding. This is done under local anesthesia. Individual follicular grafts are then dissected from that skin strip. Then the skin is punctured at the recipient site to receive the skin grafts where hair loss has occurred.
