Hair Loss Due to the Contraceptive Pill

For young women in their 20’s and 30’s who are suffering hair loss the culprit could be close at hand, it may be the contraceptive pill that they use which may be causing it. Women who have a genetic predisposition to hair loss find that the hair loss symptoms are worse when they use the pill.

There are an increasing number of young women who are having problems of hair loss because the hormone progesterone has a male hormonal effect on the hair and which is what is seen to trigger hair loss or thinning according to experts.

Some estimates say that as many as 50% women could have a disposition to hair thinning and it is therefore that triggered hair loss could occur in girls as young as 14. The hair loss is the same kind that is seen among pregnant or menopausal women.

This sort of hair loss however can be treated and is not seen to be caused by all brands of progesterone contraceptive pills. Some pills are seen to promote hair growth.
