Dealing with Head Lice

Head lice are an uncomfortable subject, because parents often think that they are evidence of poor hygiene or even perhaps irresponsible parenting. And yet sometimes with the best of efforts, an infestation may not be avoidable.

For the most part, over the counter treatments such as Nix, or others that have permethrin 1% work pretty well. Firstly hair should be washed, and toweled dry. Then the medicated application should be done and left to sit for about 10 minutes. After that, rinse it out and don’t re-shampoo. This is because an anti-lice residue gets left behind that will discourage re-infestation.

It is best to repeat the treatment after a week or so, in order that any freshly hatched or juvenile lice are not allowed to reproduce. If required a third application at the end of the second week should be carried out.

Lice treatments contain some level of toxicity so they must be used according to instructions only. If however over the counter treatments do not work, a medical opinion should be sought.
