Hair Styles Responsible for Hair Loss
A new study headed by Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Angela Kyei, M.D. has revealed that certain hair styles, particularly those favored by African American women, could be the cause for certain kinds of hair loss.
The hair braiding or weaving that is commonly seen among certain ethnic groups, could cause inflammation of the follicles, and could also cause scarring hair loss and centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. In the study 28% women showed hair loss to occur from the center of the scalp and as many as 60% showed symptoms of severe hair loss. as many as 50% of the women who were part of the study and suffered hair loss said that they had had some sort of braiding or hair weaving or extensions inserted. This was a more significant proportion than the women who had not had any braiding / weaving done.
What is also alarming is that the women who have such weaving or braiding done are also more at risk of having bacterial scalp infections and type 2 diabetes.
