Stress and Gray Hair?

If you have been watching US president Barack Obama on the TV news recently you would have seen a lot more of silver threaded through the close cropped dark hair. That gray hair was not in evidence when the world’s most powerful man was sworn in as president which clearly indicates that the graying has been a recent phenomenon.

And certainly the job of being President of the United States has to be a stressful one, so is it the stress that is turning the hair white?

No it’s not the stress that is responsible for the graying, President Obama was reported as having said. It is genetics that is responsible: Obama’s grandfather was gray at age 29 so its genes rather than stress of his job that caused the hair to go gray.

The President may be right about genetics being the chief factor of early graying. Because experts say that stress is not what turns hair white; that there is no evidence to suggest that either. According to experts, its all “genes, genes, genes” when it comes to graying early!

Hair Dye Allergies

A seventeen year old British girl recently died from an extreme reaction to hair color. About 20 minutes after using hair color she had a violent fit that ultimately took her life. This is a rare though scary occurrence and it pays to know more about hair dye allergies.

The chemical known as Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is often used in permanent hair dye and people who are mildly allergic to this chemical could have reactions such as dermatitis. The reaction could show up along the edges of the ears or on the upper eyelids. In some cases, there could be swelling of the face and the scalp. Even the eyes may shut due to the swelling brought on by allergic contact dermatitis.

In very rare cases, among those who have severe allergies, the chemical could cause contact urticaria or hives and rarely, anaphylaxis.

So if the product package tells you to do a patch test for an allergy, there is obviously good reason for it! Remember an allergic reaction may take 48 hours to show up. Also you may have been using a product for years and it may suddenly produce an allergic reaction.

Hormones and Hair: The Female Connection

Clinicians do have the rather irritating habit of blaming every female problem on to hormones but the fact is that in a lot of cases hormones are the culprit behind hair loss in women.

For instance the menopause related hair loss that women experience is known to be due to falling levels of estrogen in the body. Disturbances in the hormone levels of androgen and estrogen may result in hair problems.

Then there are thyroid imbalances that can cause hair loss or thinning at any point during a woman’s life. Stress is another factor that causes the sort of hormonal disturbances that result in hair loss.

Pregnancy, childbirth and breast feeding are other major instances of hormonal upheaval in a woman’s life that may cause temporary hair loss (though many women may experience the opposite and may find that they have the most luxuriant and healthy hair during pregnancy).

So clearly in women hair loss can often be a symptom of underlying hormonal imbalances. In such cases it is important to get to the bottom of the underlying reason rather than trying to resolve the symptoms. If the imbalance is resolved, the hair loss may well resolve itself.
