Alopecia

Causes of Alopecia

Alopecia, or baldness, is a state of lacking hair. Alopecia is a state of hair thinning and a state of resting hair falling and no new growth of hair.

Alopecia areata is mainly seen in adult men. The causes are the same as the ones mentioned on the page about baldness.

Some fungal infection on the scalp or skin can lead to Alopecia temporarily. Tumors and skin outgrowths can also cause temporary and localized Alopecia. Treatment such as chemotherapy can cause some serious hair loss leading to baldness in some cases. Hypothyroidism can cause outer thinning and balding of eyebrows. Aging is also a big factor in causing Alopecia areata. As we age our new growth of hair stops and over a period of time the existing hair falls which leads to baldness. One of a rare cause of Alopecia areata can be anxiety, depression, social phobia etc. but these lead to baldness with a very slow pace. One of the main and most common cause of Alopecia is heredity. Families who have a heredity of Alopecia areata , generally pass it down to the lower generations also.

Alopecia Treatment

As discussed above regarding the causes of alopecia, if it is due to ageing, not much treatment can be done about it except for hair transplant or hair weave. As aging is a natural process so any kind of drugs or medication may just postpone balding but to treat Alopecia areata totally is very rare.

The hair loss or balding due to temporary chemotherapy or some serious illness can be cured by medication or by discontinuing the said treatment.

The treatment of Alopecia due to heredity is still to be discovered. But artificial hair transplants and hair weaves are good options. These procedures are little painful and expensive but they treat Alopecia areata permanently.

Alopecia due to local skin infection or scalp infection or some kind of fungal infection or tumors can be cured fully by medication, but it is a slow process and may take months for the hair to grow fully.
