Alopecia
Causes of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia, or baldness, is a state of lacking hair. Alopecia is a state of hair thinning and a state of resting hair falling and no new growth of hair. Androgenic Alopecia is a hair condition also known as Androgenetic Alopecia or Alopecia Androgenetica which simply means male pattern baldness. This kind of hair loss follows a pattern that begins above the temples and then moves towards the crown of the head in a predictable manner called Hippocratic Balding. Androgenic alopecia is also found to be present in come females which follows a different pattern – rather than a receding hairline the hair all over the head starts to grow thin and scant. While many men may proceed to become completely bald over time, this is rarely the case with women who have androgenic alopecia. The underlying causes for this hair loss condition could be genetics or hormonal imbalances, as well as certain life style factors
Alopecia Areata is a hair loss condition that results in patchy hair loss from the scalp. It may be found to be present in some cases on other parts of the body as well, but is usually seen in circular bare patches at one or more sites on the scalp. Sometimes this kind of hair loss is restricted to only the beard area.
Totalis Alopecia is a hair disorder, that as the name suggests, causes all of the scalp hair to be lost. It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder though the reasons behind it are not clear. It is thought that stress is one of the factors that may contribute to this kind of hair loss; however it can also occur in people who live relatively stress free lives.
Alopecia Universalis is very rare condition that causes a person to lose all of their hair, from all parts of their body, including the eyelashes, eyebrows etc. This is considered to be the most severe form of Alopecia. This is also an autoimmune disorder and can occur in a person at any age or stage of life. This is an unpredictable condition and may resolve itself after a time or may persist lifelong.
Alopecia arearta is mainly seen in adult men. Some fungal infection on the scalp or skin can lead to androgenic alopecia temporarily. Tumors and skin outgrowths can also cause temporary and localized Alopecia. Treatment such as chemotherapy can cause some serious hair loss leading to baldness in some cases. Hypothyroidism can cause outer thinning and balding of eyebrows. Aging is also a big factor in causing Alopecia areata. As we age our new growth of hair stops and over a period of time the existing hair falls which leads to baldness. One of a rare cause of totalis alopecia can be anxiety, depression, social phobia etc. but these lead to baldness with a very slow pace. One of the main and most common cause of alopecia areata is heredity.
Alopecia Treatment
As discussed above regarding the causes of alopecia arearta, if it is due to ageing, not much treatment can be done about it except for hair transplant or hair weave. As aging is a natural process so any kind of drugs or medication may just postpone balding but to treat androgenic alopecia totally is very rare.
The hair loss or balding due to temporary chemotherapy or some serious illness can be cured by medication or by discontinuing the said treatment.
The treatment of Alopecia Areata due to heredity is still to be discovered. But artificial hair transplants and hair weaves are good options. These procedures are little painful and expensive but they treat Totalis Alopecia permanently.
Androgenic Alopecia due to local skin infection or scalp infection or some kind of fungal infection or tumors can be cured fully by medication, but it is a slow process and may take months for the hair to grow fully.
