Home Laser Hair Removers

We have talked about laser hair removal before but those were the salon versions of the treatment. There are also home kits of this hair removing process available. So what is their efficacy, cost effectiveness and most importantly their safety level?

One of the obvious benefits is the cost factor; you can save yourself a considerable amount of money by cutting out repeated visits to salons. However one needs to take into account the fact that these home kits are not cheap either.

Also before you rush out and buy one of these, consider whether you have the skin and hair type for this product to work effectively. It is ineffective on white, grey, blond or red hair and if one has dark skin or those who rarely or never sunburn also cannot effectively use the product

While it has been known that there are certain unfortunate side effects of using this product at home, such as skin irritation and even in some cases scarring or burning, these are not very common instances.

So, on a balance we have to conclude that this is not a product for everyone and for the most part people may be better advised to have the laser hair removal performed professionally.

Sulphate Free Shampoos

One hears a lot about Sulphate free shampoos, which are supposed to be so good for your hair because they don’t strip either the natural moisture of your hair nor so they strip color from hair. Some also make the claim that Sulphate free shampoos make hair straighter.

While some consumers are frankly skeptical about Sulphate free shampoos, dismissing them as something dreamt up by marketing companies, some agree that shampoos free from Sulphate (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) are in fact beneficial.

The way Sulphate shampoos work is like this: that they clean the hair by getting rid of dirt and oil but also getting rid of the natural oils of the scalp and therefore require a conditioner according to some. When using a Sulphate free shampoos one needs to scrub the scalp a bit more than usual and since Sulphate free shampoos don’t lather up that well they may feel a little different to use as well.

Another thing to consider is that by using Sulphate free shampoos you are releasing less sulphate pollution into the water that goes down the drain.

Stress and Hair Loss

When you hear the phrase ‘losing hair over it’, is it just an adage or does it have any basis in actual fact? Does stress actually cause people to lose hair? Well it does! It has been found that stress does indeed cause temporary hair loss, as demonstrated by soldiers who lose hair shortly after joining the military and encountering the stresses of the military and war like situations.

The commonest form of stress-related hair loss is telogen effluvium. It has in fact been found that a stressful event precedes hair loss by three months. However this is a temporary kind of hair loss and should be differentiated from male pattern baldness, alopecia etc. This kind of temporary hair loss is usually corrected when the stress that triggered it in the first place has been removed.

So next time you have been under stress and you notice patchy or more than normal hair loss don’t dismiss it as a mere coincidence, and don’t ignore it. This may even be the manifestation of a medical condition that requires treatment.

Hair Styles for the Working Woman

If you are a working woman, you are most likely juggling work and home and possibly kids as well, making hair care and hair styles rather less of a priority. Working women therefore need the kind of hair styles that are fuss free, low maintenance and at the same time attractive and business like.

Updo: If you have long hair, putting it up may make the most sense for a day at work, both because it gets the hair out of your way and because long loose hair may not give the most professional look. Choose from the bun, classic chignon, French twist or pleat etc. For step by step instructions, look here.

Braid: Braiding your hair not only keeps it out of the way, it is easy to do and keeps your hair in place without adjustments during the day. As a change you can leave your hair unbraided but pull in back and secure it with a smart clip or beret.

Short Hair: Here I found some great examples of classic, short hair styles, from the layered bob, to the classic bob and many others suitable for the workday.

Finasteride for Male Pattern Baldness

Finasteride is a synthetic antiandrogen which acts by inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used for treatment of many ailments, among those for treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness). This is the basic formulation that is marketed as Proscar, Propecia, etc. and is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area.

For many men, male pattern hair loss is a common condition wherein men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp. Most men who have experienced a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head may have considered treatment for it. The most common form of treatment for this condition is Finasteride, which is for use only by men and not women or children.

Sometimes it makes a lot of sense to use generic medicine rather than other branded and costlier formulations. Some online medication sites offer this Finasteride medication for as low as 33 cents a pill. So if you are considering hair loss medication, it pays to do your research beforehand.

Hair Color and Confidence

An interesting study, (admittedly carried out at the instance of a hair color company) has found that women who color their hair have a higher degree of self confidence which is reflected both in their interpersonal relationships as well as their professional dealings.

Confidence and mood levels appeared to be significantly enhanced and inhibitions lowered to an extent that “There was a marked improvement in the ability to express their opinions and ask for things that they may not ask for ordinarily in a work environment.” according to Dr Mark Sergent. Not only were women found to be more assertive after coloring hair, they also found that they got more attention and were more noticed by friends and family.

However hair color is not as simple a matter as it may seem and it is important to pay attention to some basics about hair color, and to remember that hair color does have at least some negative connotations for your hair and that hair does need some tender loving care after you are done coloring it.

Amino Acids in Hair Care Products

We hear a lot about amino acid based hair care products and how they are miraculously good for the hair: how shampoos, rinses, treatment agents containing certain kinds of amino acids make hair less breakable by increasing water holding capacity and how amino acids turn hair “smooth” and “moist”.

So what is the reality, do amino acid based hair care products really have such a beneficial effect on hair? Critics are skeptical of any real benefits accruing from these products; many are of the view that additions of these ingredients are mainly for marketing purposes. It has been found that though amino acid based hair care products are generally mild and not harsh; and also do a good job of cleaning and conditioning the hair, the amino acids present in the product, such as they are, do not directly affect the hair. However the fact that the product has added amino acids as opposed to more artificial and chemical products would be harsher for hair, is a positive factor. So on a balance you could say that amino acid products may not exactly be miraculously good for the hair, but equally they won’t harm your hair.

DNA Test for Hair Loss in Women

Did you know that an average person does not realize that they are losing hair until 50 percent of their hair has already fallen out? Well that is a pretty scary thought that hair loss can creep up on you like that without even realizing it. After all when you are not forewarned you cannot be forearmed!

A simple DNA test however, which is as uncomplicated as swabs on each cheek can now help women determine if they are at any real risk of substantial hair loss before the age of 40. It helps women know whether they have the genetic predisposition to hair loss; whether they are one among the 25% of women who will suffer female pattern balding. To be sure, losing hair is far more traumatic for women than it is for men.

You cannot regrow lost hair so if one is reasonably aware of what your genes have in store for you, you can take adequate precautions to arrest hair fall before it is too late.

Go Gray Gracefully

Most of the time, gray hair is caused by reasons beyond our control, heredity, environmental factors, pollution etc and sometimes due to things more within our control, such as stress, nutrition, even smoking. Gray hair does not mean the end of your youthful looks. There are ways to embrace your gray hair and look as attractive and striking as you would otherwise.

Consider stopping the use of hair color if more than half your hair is gray, this is enough to give an even and symmetrical look to your hair.

Also consider changing your hair style to one that is more suitable for the changed color of the hair. A well cut bob makes the hair appear thicker and less straggly and is also youthful. So if you are conscious of gray hair appearing too aging, then this style will take care of it.

Use gray appropriate products to lend more shine and luster to the hair so that it appears more silver then gray. If you take good care of your grays, there is no reason that you should not be able to confidently carry off your newer, more mature look!

Hair Perming Facts

While lovely lustrous curls may be really desirable, especially for those who have thin, straight, limp hair and are looking to add body to it, perming is the physical wrapping of the hair into shapes and a chemical bath that breaks and then reforms the disulfide bonds of your hair. In other words, the chemicals soften the inner structure of the hair. So when you do go for a perm, you need to remember the following:

· Some people may be allergic to the solution used for perming. If the solution is left in for too long it may be damaging for the scalp even to the extent of causing blisters. And getting frequent perms is not a good idea. Also remember not to color your hair just before getting a perm, because a perm will generally strip your hair of such additives anyway.

· Sometimes hair can perm unevenly, so make sure that the stylist applies the solution in an optimum manner for the optimum length of time as well.

· Perming chemically alters your hair, so be prepared to take very good care of it once it is permed especially since permed hair is very prone to split end. Also use a wide toothed comb to comb your hair.
