Causes of Dry Hair

We receive so many queries everyday by troubled ladies and gents for their dry and frizzy hair. Dry hair is difficult to take care of; they are usually unkempt and look rough.

People have dry hair because the moisture level in the body is low. The moisture level of the body should be 80% for the hair to be in good condition. When the hair is in good condition with good porosity the cuticle layer holds the hair tight and the hair does not look dry. But, when the hair is in a bad condition with bad porosity the cuticle layer loosens the hair and the hair looks dry. If the body’s moisture level is good the hair does not become dry. Our hair needs a lot of oils for it to remain in good condition.

There are several causes of dry hair. One being as discussed earlier the lack of moisture in the body which causes the hair cuticles to dry and loosen. Then extreme temperature affects the texture of hair. If you are living in areas which have extreme temperature like extreme heat or extreme cold then it is likely that your hair might become brittle. Then another cause could be use of wrong shampoos and conditioners. One should check the conditioners and shampoos properly before buying. Shampoos and conditioners should be bought as per one’s hair type. Improper diet can also cause hair to dry. Improper amount of liquids can reduce the moisture of the body and make the hair frizzy and brittle.

Dry Hair Remedy

There are various treatments for dry hair. Firstly good and healthy diet is useful in nourishing hair. A good quantity of liquid intake in the form of water and juices helps in maintaining moisture in the body and in turn helps in keeping the hair less dry. Secondly do not expose your hair to too much of extreme climatic changes. This might also lead to hair getting brittle. Avoid blow-drying, perming, coloring, bleaching, back-combing etc as these could dry your hair further. Use of proper shampoo and conditioner will help in giving hydration to dehydrated hair.

Natural Treatments for Dry Hair

You can try the following recipes to retain the moisture in your hair and make them soft and silky to touch:

  1. Take a little coconut oil or olive oil in a bowl and heat it mildly. Take a small cotton ball and dip it in the oil. With this cotton ball gently apply oil on the entire scalp. Now gently massage the scalp for at least a half hour. Stress causes our muscles to get tense. This massage helps in relieving the stress and relaxing the muscles. After the massage, take a small tub of hot water and a small towel to fit your scalp. Then dip the towel in the hot water, squeeze the excess water out and then apply the hot towel on the head and leave it for a while. Repeat the same a few times. The steam opens the pores of your scalp and further helps the oil to nourish the roots. After the entire procedure, you can wash as usual with a mild shampoo.

  2. Mix a teaspoon of honey with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Beat in an egg yolk. Massage on hair in small sections. Wrap the hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo. This is a great treatment for adding moisture to the hair and keeping split ends away.

  3. Massaging fresh avocado on shampooed hair and keeping it for 15 minutes and then rinsing helps in retaining moisture of the hair.

  4. Mix one spoon of vinegar to water and rinse hair. It makes the hair shiny.
