Trichotillomania
Causes of Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder which involves strong urge to pull hair. It is commonly known as “trich”. The statistics show that it is rare and around 1% to 3% people suffer from this disorder. It also reveals that 62% of the sufferers are women. Trichotillomania is an Impulse control disorder.
Trichotillomania causes constant pulling and twisting of hair. It is a psychological state where there is tension before the hair is pulled and the tension is relieved after the completion of pulling hair. Hair pulling leads to uneven appearance which in turn leads to an inferiority complex. People suffering from trich generally do not accept the disorder.
Trichotillomania Treatment
The treatment to trichotillomania can be done by giving training in reversing the habit. If the patient is suffering from depression, tension or lot of stress; it is highly advisable to consult a doctor. Most people tend to pull out their hair when they are depressed, irritated, agitated or nervous.
Various self help methods can be tried by the patient. Strong will power needs to be built up to control the urge to pull out the hair. The patient needs to first accept that he suffers from the disorder and then decide that he is going to try his or her best to cure himself of it. A simple method that can work effectively can be tried at home. Apply some kind of hair oil to the hair that you tend to pull out (the eyebrows, the eyelashes, the hair on the head, whatever). Now every time you try to pull out the hair, your hands will become greasy and you will need to wash them. After some time this will prove to be a strong deterrent. You will get tired of washing your hands repeatedly. You can reapply the oil after some hours if it gets absorbed into the skin. Doing this over a period of days will get you out of the habit. Also, the oil will help nourish your roots and help induce hair growth. So this simple solution will have a two-fold benefit.
